Birmingham City Council

Birmingham set a challenging and ambitious climate change target when it published its strategic framework in June 2008 – “Cutting CO2 for a Smarter Birmingham”. This sets down that Birmingham would cut its CO2 emissions by 60% by 2026. addressing the emissions from transport in the city is a vital component which will also help address air quality and noise standards in the city.

A new Strategic Action Plan to deliver this target has already been the subject of consultation with partners in the city through its BeBirmingham LSP. The new Action Plan will be finally agreed in June 2009.

The City Council is firmly committed to instituting low carbon vehicles across its fleet of over 2000 vehicles, and also in promoting ultra low carbon vehicles with its partners in the city including Aston University, University of Birmingham (with its hydrogen and fuel cell cars), the health sector, police and private sector, etc

The key tasks to be undertaken by Birmingham City Council, in line with Coventry Council, will be in selection of the users for the demonstrator vehicles, the selection of the sites for the infrastructure and the physical installation of the charging stations. The City Council is also working closely with its other user partners – the NEC Group Ltd, and the Health authorities (through the PCT and also the University Hospital Birmingham with its new hospital which will complete in 2010). The City Council will work closely with Mitsubishi, JLR and Smart
