Coventry University

The roots of Coventry University can be traced back to 1843 when it was known as the Coventry College of Design. The University has a strong tradition of working with industry. The University was winner of; best design school in the world 2005; and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education 2007. It has world class facilities including SURGE, the Applied Research Centre in Sustainable Regeneration.

SURGE was formed to provide high quality evidence-based research, consultancy, and training services to the public, private and voluntary sectors. By applying these services to the broad spectrum of economic and social regeneration, we support business and society in achieving a more equal, just and sustainable country where the outcomes and benefits of regeneration are enjoyed by all. Our work, which has both an urban and rural dimension, is focused in two key themes:

Economic Development, Modernisation and Diversification: incorporating agricultural restructuring, competitiveness, labour market analysis, sectors and clusters, skills needs and provision, tourism and heritage, and urban and rural connectivity.

Neighbourhood Renewal and Social Inclusion: incorporating sustainable communities, economic disparity and disadvantage, neighbourhood renewal, quality of life and well-being, and social justice.

A key feature of our work is that it has a direct impact and makes a difference by informing regeneration policy and practice; whether that is through commissioned research by government and non-governmental departments and agencies, or through continuing professional development activities. Our work is very much people focused either indirectly, through them being beneficiaries of our services, or directly through them shaping, participating and engaging in our research, consultancy and training activities. Moreover, we routinely share our findings with those who have contributed our research projects, and we place a particular emphasis on publicising and applying the results of our work.

SURGE will assist in the identification and analysis of a suitable and mixed user base. A hydrogen refuelling facility will also be installed on University premises.
