Energy company E.ON is one of the UK’s leading power and gas suppliers – generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas – and is part of the E.ON group, one of the world's largest investor-owned power and gas companies. We employ around 17,000 people in the UK and over 93,000 worldwide. E.ON’s retail business is a leading energy supplier in the UK with around 5.5 million electricity and gas customers. Our distribution business, Central Networks, provides a reliable supply to 9.4m people in central England through 133,000km of underground and overhead cables – enough to go round the Earth more than three times – and via almost 97,000 substations
E.ON recognises the need to change the way we think about and use energy and is committed to reducing the climate impact of energy use. Our target is to cut the carbon released by each kW of electricity we generate by 10% between 2005-2012, having already reduced it by 20% since 1990. We also recognise the need to show leadership by reducing the carbon intensity of our own business activities and helping our customers to do so as well. In support of this we have already invested £100 million in energy efficiency measures since 2006, including loft and cavity wall insulation, installation of energy efficient boilers and trials of smart energy meters.
E.ON believes that electric vehicles have the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of a more sustainable transport sector in the UK, whilst acknowledging that there are a range of questions to be answered and challenges to be addressed before mass market adoption can occur. We believe that joining the CABLED project is an important step in this process that will provide valuable insights into user behaviour, the requirement for charging infrastructure and the impact of the vehicles on the electricity distribution network.
