Jaguar Landrover
Jaguar Land Rover is one of the world's leading manufacturers of premium vehicles with a turnover in excess of £7,000 million. Now under the ownership of Tata Motors Ltd the company has a plan to invest £800M over the next 5 years in sustainable technologies. To accelerate these technologies to production a new Hybrid Centre of Competence has been set up to cover both research and development of hybrids. Technologies such as stop/start systems developed by the group have already entered production and will be followed by both micro and full hybrids.
Jaguar and Land Rover has successfully built 2 diesel/electric full hybrid prototypes as part of the Energy Saving Trust project "Leander". We have a number of ongoing TSB funded research projects covering plug-in, flywheel and series hybrids. With a dedicated team of 90 engineers and access to the rest of JLR's product development team (over 3,000 people) we have the expertise and facilities to set up and run a successful plug-in hybrid fleet trial.
JLR will provide 5 Range-e vehicles for the trial. Range_e is a 5 off real world low carbon fleet trial based on the latest 10MY Range Rover Sport 3.0 diesel.Using a plug-in parallel diesel hybrid system this offers a premium 4 seat SUV that can run as a pure EV (electric vehicle) using energy from mains electricity in charge depleting mode. It can also operate as a conventional hybrid in charge sustaining mode minimising CO2 across its full breadth of capability.
When applied to a lightweight vehicle architecture and a downsized diesel engine it would have the potential to achieve <60g/km CO2 whilst maintaining the full breadth of capability expected of a Land Rover.
