Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has traditionally been known for its technically advanced and highly reliable 4x4s and performance cars. What people don’t know, however, is that Mitsubishi has also been developing electric vehicles over the last 40 years.
36 Mitsubishi Libero EVs were sold between 1993 and 1996. The FTO EV broke the record for the furthest distance achieved by an electric vehicle in 24 hours when it covered 2,142.3 km in December 1999. The Eclipse EV in the annual Shikoku EV Rally in 2001 completed over 400 km on a single charge and the Evo MiEV ran in the same rally in 2001 with its revolutionary in-wheel motor technology. In 2005, the Evo MiEV reached 0-62 mph in under 8 seconds with a top speed of 115 mph.
More recently, in 2006, Mitsubishi Motors developed the all-electric Mitsubishi i MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle). This vehicle is available now, and full production started in July, with the first vehicles already destined for UK roads.
The i MiEV is a fully electric city car with zero emissions. It's a real car, which ensures no compromise in cabin space and comfortably seats 4 adults with room for luggage. It has a top speed of 81 mph, a range of 100 miles and can be trickle charged from flat to full in 6 hours at any UK three-pin socket - and it only costs 96p for a full charge. In addition, the i MiEV can be fast-charged from flat to 80% in just 30 minutes (should infrastructure become available). In November, the i MiEV will be the first 4-seat fully electric vehicle produced by a mainstream manufacturer to arrive in the UK.
